WOMEN VOL 1

In Women Vol I, Mandee Johnson investigates the importance of female friendships through photographic portraiture. After taking the advice of her mother that "no one can replace a good girlfriend," Johnson seeks to explore the friendships she has worked for throughout her life and how they may have shaped her as a person. The black and white 4x5 portraits play with themes of intimacy, longing, and vulnerability. The location of each image was chosen by the subject and plays a key role in each image, succinctly capturing the uniqueness of each person and leading to further thoughts about their lives. While solitary figures reside in each image, en masse the series examines the shared emotion and connection that occurs within female friendship circles.
